Red Deer County Exteriors

Red Deer County surrounds the City of Red Deer and stretches south to the Mountain View County line, taking in Bowden, Innisfail, Penhold, Springbrook, Pine Lake, Delburne, Spruce View, Markerville and the country around Sylvan Lake. It is productive mixed farming and country-residential land, and it marks the far northern edge of the area we work.

Central Alberta weather is its own pattern rather than an extension of Calgary's. Storms here form and track independently, and summer convective hail is a regular event with its own corridors. Winter accumulation is generally heavier and holds longer than in Calgary, and the chinook effect is weaker this far north — which means fewer freeze-thaw cycles but longer sustained cold and heavier standing snow load on roofs.

That combination changes the priorities. Snow load and ice damming matter more here than the freeze-thaw cycling that dominates further south, which puts the emphasis on ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and on attic ventilation that genuinely works. An under-ventilated attic in Red Deer County will build ice dams every winter and shorten every roof you put on it.

Farm buildings are the bulk of the rural work. Shops, machine sheds, barns and grain storage carry big simple roof areas with long uninterrupted runs, they take the same hail and wind the house does, and they are almost always the most neglected structures on a parcel because nobody stands under them and there is no ceiling to reveal a leak. They are also the buildings most often left off a hail claim entirely, which is worth fixing at inspection rather than discovering years later.

Red Deer County's permit rules govern rural parcels rather than the City of Red Deer's or the towns'. For structures the county is generally more permissive on size than a town lot and sometimes stricter on siting relative to a well head, a septic field or a right-of-way. Shop and oversized garage builds are common, and the usual binding constraint is the approach a loaded concrete truck can reach and turn on.
