Canmore Exteriors

Canmore is the most demanding environment in our service area, and the exteriors here have to be built for it. Elevation is significantly higher than Calgary's, snow accumulation is deeper and sits longer, freeze-thaw is more frequent, and the valley funnels wind in ways a prairie town never sees. A roof specified for Calgary is under-specified for Canmore.

Snow load is the first design input, and it is structural rather than cosmetic. Accumulation that sits for months puts sustained load on the roof structure, and the melt-refreeze cycle at the eave makes ice damming a near-certainty every winter. That means ice-and-water membrane well past the code minimum — at the eaves, in every valley and around every penetration — and it makes attic ventilation more important here than anywhere else we work. An unbalanced attic in Canmore will build ice dams every single season.

Wildfire is the second consideration and it is taken seriously in this valley. Canmore, Harvie Heights, Dead Man's Flats, Lac des Arcs and Exshaw all sit in the wildland-urban interface, and the mechanism that destroys structures is ember cast. Non-combustible James Hardie fibre cement cladding will not ignite from embers, and enclosed properly vented soffit matters for the same reason — open eaves catch embers, and an attic fire takes the house.

The third factor is architectural control. Canmore's development permit process and the design guidelines applying in many of its neighbourhoods regulate materials, colours and forms far more tightly than a typical Alberta municipality. Fibre cement in the right profile and colour is one of the more straightforward ways to satisfy those requirements while getting a mountain-appropriate look, and getting the approval right before ordering material saves an expensive reset.

Conifer cover is the fourth. Spruce and pine drop needles year-round rather than seasonally, and needles are the debris most likely to reach a downspout and mat at the outlet where the blockage is invisible until the trough overflows. Fine stainless micro-mesh is the only guard style that actually addresses it — coarse perforated guards pass needles straight through.

Practically, Canmore is about seventy minutes west and at the far edge of our radius, so work here is staged so the crew and the materials arrive together and the job runs continuously rather than across several trips. The Town of Canmore's permit process is its own; Harvie Heights, Dead Man's Flats, Lac des Arcs and Exshaw fall under the MD of Bighorn with different requirements again.
